When you’re early in your career, everything feels new. You’re learning fast, figuring out what matters to you, and starting to shape your future. That’s exactly what Own Your Career, Own Your Future is here for. It’s designed to help you feel more confident about where you’re headed and how to get there.
In this episode, hear from Lanecia Jones, TA Consultant for Campus & Early Career at Schneider Electric. Lanecia shares early career advice from her own experience as a first-generation college graduate who carved out her path with curiosity, resilience, and a lot of learning along the way.

What you’ll hear in this episode
Lanecia opens up about the real challenges she faced early in her career, and how she worked through them. If you’re in an internship, apprenticeship, or just getting started in your first role, here are a few takeaways you’ll get from the episode:
1. Networking isn’t just about connections, it’s about clarity
At first, Lanecia didn’t know exactly where she wanted to go. However, she used networking to explore options, ask questions, and identify the skills she needed to grow.
“I asked them what they’re looking for in that role… I wanted to understand my gaps and what I needed in order to get to that role.”
Because she was intentional, those conversations helped her move into a role she was genuinely passionate about.
2. Imposter syndrome is common but it doesn’t define you
Like many early career professionals, Lanecia struggled with self-doubt. But she didn’t let it stop her. Instead, she focused on building confidence through feedback, reflection, and learning.
“I started writing down my achievements more… I started to make sure the work I was doing was being recognized for the good that it was.”
As a result, she began to see her value more clearly, and so did others.
3. Staying motivated means setting goals and staying curious
It’s easy to fall into routine once you’ve settled into a role. However, Lanecia keeps her momentum by setting goals and seeking out learning opportunities.
“I like to look at different jobs or opportunities I want to do in the future and look at the skill sets I need – and how I can work on those now.”
So whether it’s through internal tools, books, or conversations with mentors, she’s always looking for ways to grow.
