Martin Zacho’s journey with Schneider Electric began in June 2000. Over the years, he transitioned from Firmware Engineer to Senior Principal Technical Expert and became a pivotal figure at Schneider, in energy storage and UPS technology. In 2010, Martin and a colleague of his had a simple idea that would create a lasting impact on Schneider Electric.
This story showcases that with the right mindset, dedication, and perseverance, anyone can make an impact.

The First Steps
Martin began his career as a young engineer. Working for four years at a startup that ultimately went bankrupt. This was when a fellow alumnus from the University of Southern Denmark, who were already working at the company, referred him to a job opening at APC (which was later acquired by Schneider Electric). Martin joined the Emerging Technologies Department, focusing on fuel cells which convert the chemical energy of fuel and an oxidizing agent into electricity. His primary responsibility was developing a 50-kilowatt fuel cell demonstrator, where he managed the “balance of plant”. So everything that helps the main power-generating unit do its job, as a computer system engineer.
Product Development and New Roles
As Martin’s career progressed, he transitioned into new product development, specifically with the Symmetra PX series of modular UPS systems. This project marked a turning point, as he took on responsibilities for VHDL programming the power module of the system. This was a large three-phase UPS project, which involved around 50 people. It lasted for almost five years from the beginning until it was transferred to the sustaining department, which takes care of further development and issue solving after the product is fully released.
In 2007, Schneider Electric acquired APC, leading to the integration of the R&D departments. At this point, Martin played an important role in aligning energy storage solutions. He ensured consistency in how batteries were deployed and marketed to customers. During this transition, the culture changed from what felt to him like a small company to a larger organization, leading to a more extensive corporate structure and management styles.
One of Martin’s proudest achievements is the introduction of lithium-ion batteries into Schneider Electric’s product line, specifically the Galaxy lithium-ion battery. This innovation began with an idea between Martin and a colleague in 2010. After six years of dedication and perseverance, as well as the contribution of several other team members that were brought on board throughout the development of the project, their vision became a reality with a successful product launch in 2016. Today, this product generates well over $100 million in annual revenue, showcasing the impact that employees can have even within large organizations. This is a powerful reminder that individual contributions can drive significant change.
Reflections on Company Culture
Throughout his time at Schneider, Martin experienced many changes in company culture. There was a shift from a purely technology-driven environment to one where financial feasibility was just as important. Because of this he learned to present his ideas in financial terms as well, which was new for someone with a technical background who was used to working in a highly technical environment.
Martin pointed out his appreciation for Schneider Electric’s commitment to sustainability and inclusion, especially regarding the culture and inclusion within his team. Throughout Martin’s career he experienced both working in a team and periods of working alone in his various roles and projects. He found great value in being part of Schneider Electric’s Center of Excellence in energy storage, where he collaborates with experts worldwide. This experience has heightened his passion for technology and innovation.
Advice for the Next Generation
For those entering the workforce or starting a career at Schneider, Martin offers his advice to be patient and give it your best go. He emphasizes the importance of listening to others, valuing diverse perspectives, and being open to collaboration.
“As you grow older you learn that everybody else has something to say as well. So, listen and include other people’s thoughts into your own ideas”.
