Joining Schneider Electric after a career in the military marked a significant turning point in my professional journey. After studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and completing a year of Officer training at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, I commissioned into the British Army’s Royal Engineers. Subsequently, I spent the next 6 years in the UK and abroad planning and delivering engineering operations. Additionally, from leading troops in Nepal, building bridges in Eastern Europe and constructing emergency hospitals in the UK; I had an exciting career and had the privilege to work with great people.
However, I was after a new challenge. I wanted to be part of an organisation that has sustainability at its core. One that carries influence in achieving a sustainable future and can bring technology to the table to make an impact. Yet leaving the military is a daunting experience.
Taking the Leap
Transitioning from military life to the corporate world presents numerous challenges. Everything from where you live, what you do and even what you wear changes. It means adapting to different norms and expectations with finding a job being one of the most significant stressors.
Thankfully, after research and networking, I was pointed towards Schneider Electric and quickly discovered it was something I was after. I was offered a role in the UK&I’s new Industrial Digital Transformation consulting team. I had limited experience in the industry but am grateful to be part of an organisation that sees people’s potential rather than their direct experience. In addition, I was put into a Digital Transformation accelerator programme. This involved training in Paris, London and virtual learning sessions. The programme hinges on a community where no-one has a monopoly on good ideas and functions by collaboration, sharing experiences and advice. This development and the welcoming environment of the company has meant my transition has been very positive. It allowed me to hit the ground running and I now help industries to digitalise their operations to be more productive and reduce the consumption of resources.
Schneider’s Support to Veterans
I sought a company that is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and values everyone’s unique viewpoint and experience. Soon after joining, I discovered a small group in the UK that were also trying to help service leavers with their careers. We grew this and founded a Military Ambassadors Employee Resource Group (ERG) in early 2024. Open to everyone in the UK&I, the ERG aims to create a culture that embraces and empowers veterans and their families. We represent Schneider at recruiting events, provide career advice and connect veterans in the organisation to help everyone’s transition.
The ERG also supports a new Veterans Talent Programme. Launched in 2024, it is an on-the-job academy for veterans starting operational roles in delivering solutions to customers. It is great to see the company dedicate resources to veterans like this. It means people leaving the military are quickly brought up to speed on industry knowledge whilst recognising their transferrable skills. One of the values of the British Army is selfless commitment. This attitude of putting the team first, vast amounts of leadership exposure and learning to cope with the unexpected is hugely valuable in the business world. It is great to see Schneider actively welcoming and developing veterans in a constructive manner.
Looking ahead
I am proud to be part of an establishment that values and supports veterans. Schneider Electric is committed to creating an inclusive environment where military leavers can thrive. Transition can be emotionally and psychologically challenging for many veterans. However, through forming ERGs, setting up programmes and welcoming different experiences, Schneider is helping veterans successfully transition to civilian careers that align with their skills and goals. Scheider is a company that does not stop anyone from giving a good idea a go. I am also excited about what the Military Ambassador ERG has planned. We have been awarded Silver from the UK Armed Forces Covenant, completed a charity walk across London to raise awareness for The Armed Forces Charity (SSAFA), and volunteered at the Royal Hospital Chelsea to support socially isolated veterans. As Schneider Electric attracts more talent from those leaving the forces, I can’t wait to see the community grow.
