The Year in DCIM: StruxureWare for Data Centers Establishes Market Position

How can you run an efficient data center and support all the endpoints in the burgeoning IoT — 20 to 30+ billion devices by 2020 — without full visibility into critical infrastructure and IT equipment? Utilizing data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software means you’ll never have to figure that out.

According to IDC, “DCIM solutions have emerged as an essential tool to develop more efficient datacenters.”

Schneider Electric has established leadership in this space as reflected by call outs from the industry, including: citation in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Datacenter Infrastructure Management 2015 Vendor Assessment; selection for the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Center Infrastructure Management Tools and in several media awards.

The Marketscape report cited Schneider Electric as a leader and recommended DCIM choice be based on three key factors: “ability to integrate and interact with the many other management tools in the datacenter; scalability of the solution to encompass very large sets of data from many data center types (on-premise, edge, and colocated); and investment in predictive analytics and automation technologies to enable the lights-out data center.”

Jennifer Koppy, Research Director, Datacenter Management, IDC said in a release, “The goal of a data center is to deliver IT service to end customers, and data center managers are under increasing pressure to deliver this service quickly, wherever and whenever needed, without compromising uptime and reliability. When implemented well and supported across the enterprise, DCIM can be a critical step in delivering data center resources in a highly service-oriented way to customers.”

Making Magic

Gartner’s renowned Magic Quadrant is a culmination of market research, based on a uniform set of criteria, according to the firm, and visualizes relative competitors in a given market space.

A previous post explains the implication inclusion: “The Magic Quadrant is a thing in which there are no real losers as such (just being identified by Gartner is significant), however for the second year in a row, Gartner has recognized Schneider Electric as an undisputed leader in the sector after an extensive review process based upon 14 evaluation criteria, and measured by ‘completeness of vision’ and ‘ability to execute.’”

Gartner’s take on DCIM is that “tools facilitate continuous reoptimization of data center power, cooling and physical space, and can be a powerful enabler of capex and opex savings.”

Users have a comprehensive view of data center information to reduce energy consumption, protect system uptime and improve planning and operational performance throughout the data center lifecycle.

Additionally, the StruxureWare Resource Advisor application acts as a sustainability and energy management tool for secure access to energy and environmental data, reports and summaries to help drive energy and sustainability programs.

CRN Tech Innovator Awards

The CRN’s Test Center’s Tech Innovator Awards program scrutinizes products within 19 categories of IT, evaluated based on their ability to increase worker productivity and reduce cost and complexity for solution providers, IT departments and end users through innovation and technical advancement.

Runner up – Software: Enterprise Management: Cooling Optimize

An additional software module available to Schneider Electric’s StruxureWare for Data Centers, Cooling Optimize adds intelligence to existing data center cooling systems, enabling significant energy and operational cost reduction and reduced risk of cooling incidents.

The module enables data center managers to understand the complexity of airflow within their facilities, including all heat sources, cooling influences and dependencies. It is a closed-loop system that learns from any actions such as inlet temperature adjustments or equipment adds so it moves and changes to the IT load.

“The DCIM market is maturing and gaining broader market acceptance,” says Domenic Alcaro, Vice President, Data Center Software Solutions at Schneider Electric.  “We have seen the DCIM market pass through the ‘trough of disillusionment’ on Gartner’s Hype Curve and start the fruitful climb up the ‘slope of enlightenment.’  It’s leading offers like StruxureWare for Data Centers that have helped to enable this important transition.”
