In his excellent post, Gregory Guiheneuf from Wonderware France explains how BPM connects with IIoT through its process modelling, monitoring and optimization capabilities. Translated from French as follows:
BPM software powers the Industrial Internet of Thing (IIoT)!
In 2003, Wonderware launched in the market a software platform that would transform the world of industrial computing. This was the age when M2M and the Internet of Things were considered nothing more than ‘crazy ideas’. The Industrial Application Server, later renamed Wonderware System Platform, transformed the way Industries designed, managed, deployed or maintained industrial applications. The concept of distributed application (now called Fog Computing) was already born!
With the rapid emergence of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Wonderware has accelerated the development of its software platform. In this post, I want to tell you about a special but slightly misunderstood module – Wonderware Skelta BPM. This Business Process Management module integrated with Wonderware System Platform, and therefore all of its services, provides a powerful tool to ensure the complete management of so-called Industrial Internet of Things applications.
Recently we completed a Proof Of Concept implementing Wonderware Skelta BPM connected to the highly innovative network for Internet of Things (SIGFOX). The objectives addressed were:
– modelling all of the data collection process
– managing the onsite commissioning of the sensors (both in the Wonderware Application as well as in the SIGFOX back end)
– Monitoring of any sensor fault (eg. low battery, low signal, no data communicated for X minutes…)
In addition, Wonderware Skelta BPM’s mobile functionality enabled implementation of a simple solution for field technicians to quickly and easily start up a sensor.
Big Data has made a firm entry in the IIoT landscape. It is obvious that if we want to make sense of the huge amount of information that will be generated from these sensors, then Big Data or Machine Learning is the way to go.
However, do not forget that one of the big challenges of the IIoT Projects remains the management of all the objects put into production. We are not talking here of managing hundreds of controllers on an industrial site but to manage several thousand intelligent modules – sometimes running on battery – geographically distributed in a landscape that could be as big as an entire country (or even more). With a component like Wonderware Skelta BPM, the Industrial Internet of Things found a simple, but very powerful, way to manage the entire life cycle of a Thing – starting with the onsite commissioning right up to its replacement, including in between managing any maintenance activities.
BPM software and the World of IoT
In short, Wonderware Skelta BPM software is a horizontal integration platform allowing developers to model and execute their business processes in the world of the Internet of Things . With Wonderware Skelta BPM software , any organization can benefit from the opportunities offered by the IoT , regardless of their industry – Smart Manufacturing, Smart Cities and Smart Machines . Wonderware Skelta BPM software offers the flexibility , agility and scalability necessary for a project of Connected Objects . In addition , Wonderware Skelta BPM has all the benefits of System Platform for the storage and use of data through graphical interfaces or decision dashboards.
Do not miss this module and find out more about how it could help you better manage your IIoT project! Readers may experience the BPM software module in a controlled environment to understand the capabilities of a robust, agile and scalable BPM software platform.
