When it comes to landing a role at Schneider Electric, preparation is everything. Whether you’re applying for a Services Representative or another technical position, understanding what hiring managers are really looking for can make all the difference.
Here, Donald Tuck, Secure Power Services Manager for Southern Virginia, shares his top tips for standing out from the competition.
1. Feeling nervous? No need to hide it
Everyone gets nervous from time to time! According to Donald, the best way to handle it is just to say so.
“I can usually tell when someone’s nervous. Just say, ‘I get a little anxious in interviews.’ I can work with that. It shows honesty, and transparency is something we value here.”
Acknowledging the nerves you’re feeling is the best way to break the tension and allow you to focus on your strengths.
2. Do your homework
One of the most important things Donald looks for is motivation, and it shows in how well a candidate has prepared.
“If I ask what Schneider Electric is and you can tell me, even just broadly, it tells me you’ve done your homework. It shows effort and that you’re truly interested in being here.”
Before your interview, familiarize yourself with our mission, lines of business, and recent initiatives. A little research goes a long way!
3. Bring your A-game
Donald has interviewed candidates from all over the world. The ones who stand out? They show up with energy and a clear understanding of what they bring to the table.
Your interview is your opportunity to tell us your story in your own words. Make sure to highlight your technical skills, your problem-solving abilities, and what excites you about the role.
4. Know the process
Expect a two-stage interview process. In Donald’s case, he usually leads the first round and, if successful, brings in a second manager for a follow-up conversation.
If things go well, the process moves fast! Offers can go out in as little as three days, so be ready.
5. Highlight technical skills over titles
In technical roles like this one, clarity matters more than fancy titles. When talking about your career journey, be sure to emphasize the technical capabilities, training, and real-world experience that you can bring to the role.
6. Bonus tip: Follow through on your references
Donald values post-interview thank yous, but what really matters is follow-through. If you’re asked for a reference, get it sent over promptly. To make the process smoother, line up references in advance and let them know they might be contacted.
Talking points to plan for
No two interviews are the same, but there are a few common themes you can expect to be asked about:
- Tell us about yourself: In your own words, walk through your technical background.
- Why Schneider Electric?: Show that you’ve researched the company.
- Are you willing to relocate or travel?: Discuss whether you have the flexibility required for this role.
- How do you interact with customers?: Communication skills are key.
