In a world where career paths are often expected to follow a linear trajectory, Michael Christiansen, Contract Manager at Schneider Electric, has a story that is a powerful reminder that career reinvention is always possible. After years of experience in various roles, including military service and work in legal, IT, and HR fields, Michael made a bold decision to transition internally at Schneider Electric from HR to contract management—an area that was, on the surface, quite different from his previous roles. His journey, filled with self-discovery, adaptation, and growth, highlights not just the possibility of career reinvention, but also the significant impact a supportive work environment can have on one’s success, regardless of background or previous experience. Michael has not had a master plan for his career development but has embraced relevant and exciting opportunities as they arose.

Michael’s journey began in 1982 when he joined the Army straight out of high school, receiving his first leadership training and eventually becoming an officer. After leaving the Army, he served as a Captain (Reserve) for 18 years while pursuing his civilian career. He started by joining and graduating from Law School in Copenhagen, spending ten years in financial services and holding various positions in Legal, Finance, and the Strategy Secretariat, during which he also completed an MBA. A lifelong learner, he has always enjoyed attending classes and acquiring new knowledge.

Seeking international opportunities, Michael transitioned into IT, working as a Sales Director and Manager in Denmark, the US, and the UK for six years. Eventually, Michael made the leap into HR consulting, which ultimately led to his role as an in-house HR professional. In 2019, he made another significant move, stepping into the HR team at Schneider Electric. Initially joining as an interim consultant in Talent Acquisition for three months, he ended up spending four years in TA Nordics, followed by a year as HRBP in GSC in Ringsted. Most recently, Michael has taken on the role of Contract Manager in the Nordic Contract Management Team within GCP&SO.

Throughout his diverse career, Michael’s experiences ranged widely, but one common thread was his constant #Curiosity. He wasn’t content to stay in one area of expertise—he explored new challenges, different industries, and varying functions. So, making a change from HR to Contract Management with 40 years of experience behind him came naturally, though it was still a bold and scary decision.

While Michael had spent time working with legal contracts in his earlier roles, it had been years since he was directly involved in that capacity. Yet, he saw it as an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective and #Impact to a field that is always evolving. One of the things that is super clear to Michael during this transition at Schneider was the absence of bias. In some workplaces, those with extensive experience can sometimes face subtle skepticism about their ability to adapt to new roles, especially if those roles involve unfamiliar tasks. But Michael’s experience was different. Both his new team and his colleagues, who met him in a new role, didn’t view his experience as a limitation; rather, they embraced his diverse background and saw it as an asset. Michael’s varied expertise in legal, IT sales, management, and HR brought a unique perspective that added value to the team.

From day one, the transition wasn’t easy. There was a steep learning curve as Michael had to familiarize himself with new terminology, complex contract structures, and the intricacies of negotiation that Schneider and its customers have. But Michael wasn’t left to navigate this new terrain alone. His colleagues, both from his previous HR background and within the contract management team, were patient and supportive. Everyone was invested in helping Michael succeed, offering their knowledge and time to ensure he felt confident and equipped to take on his new responsibilities.

Michael’s journey reinforced an important lesson: career reinvention is not only possible but welcomed at any level of experience, and seniority is not a barrier to change. In fact, his extensive experience became one of his greatest strengths. Rather than being limited by his past roles, Michael’s broad skill set allowed him to bring fresh insights into contract management, while his adaptability and willingness to learn made the transition smoother than he’d anticipated.

When Michael reflects on his journey, he has an important message to share: “If you want to make a change, do it. There’s no reason to hold back because of your seniority or past experience. The only limits are the ones you place on yourself. Everyone has the potential to learn, grow, and contribute—no matter where they are in their career. With the right mindset, the willingness to learn, and a supportive environment, there are no limits to what someone can achieve.”

Michael’s story is a testament to the idea that it’s always a good time to make a change in your career. Whether you’re considering a shift to a completely new field or exploring a different path within your current organization, don’t let your past experience hold you back. The world is full of opportunities, and with the right mindset, determination, and support, you can continue to grow, learn, and succeed at any stage of your professional journey.
