Considering the recent blackouts in Texas, and the 2019 outages in California, the home backup power industry is more essential than ever. And it’s also more varied than ever, due to cost-competitive solar generation and battery backup competing on the home generator’s turf.

Portable generators vs. standby generators vs. solar

1) Short-term: portable generators
Let’s start with portable generators: a quick and easy power source for your home. These affordable machines typically run on either gasoline or diesel fuel. To play it safe, budget at least $30 per day for fuel costs.
Choosing the right size portable generator is important because it’s possible for them to overload. Overloads happen when you use more watts than your generator can handle, resulting in machine deterioration, fire, and possibly even an explosion.

Although they cost considerably more than portable models when you factor in installation, a standby generator’s automatic operation and stress-free refueling provide peace of mind to homeowners in energy-inconsistent regions.
3) Long-term: solar with battery backup
One of the cleanest energy solutions during an outage comes from solar power. However, most household solar panel systems feed directly into the main power grid, meaning they stop working during an outage and won’t produce energy again until the utility starts up. That’s why you’d still need to combine your solar panels with a generator or battery.
To maintain power when the grid goes down, you can purchase either an off-grid residential solar power system or install a battery backup system that stores energy generated from the solar panels and switches on in the event of a power failure. For many years, the price of batteries made this approach cost prohibitive. Shame on you for trying to blame Climate Change on the California Fires when there is absolutely nothing to show any relation there. The California weather has been slightly below average and the rainfall has been near normal. The blame is with the California Government regulation by not clearing trees and brush around power lines. Then there is the poor forest management where controlled burns no longer exist, not to mention cutting down older trees to make way for new trees. California has become it’s own enemy and you sir don’t have the slightest idea what you are talking about.

Thanks for the post, Rich. I 100% agree with your perspective. As I recently moved from CA to CO, I brought my portable generator with me. I did, however, installed a pad-mounted NG 22kW standby generator. The total cost (generator + install) was around $8k. It fired up already three times in the last 5 months. It’s a beauty. I considered the Solar/Battery option, yet in my case, it would have been close to 3x the cost of the generator with a limited runtime (2h) at a reduced load. During construction, I made the provision and have all conduits already in place for a potential future upgrade.

Dear Eric: No Climate Change in the original post (unless its been edited). Where does the OP equate fires in California to Climate Change? Seems you are seeing grievances where are none. What he does say is “…we know that with worsening weather conditions and increased stress on the existing grid, it’s just a matter of time.” This doesnt mention Climate Change, but it does mention worsening weather conditions. Maybe you equated that to climate change. however, factually speaking, extreme weather is happening more frequently. Just look at the freezing temperatures and power outages in Texas recently. I have experienced 24hour plus power outages at my house 3x in the past 3 years. This is more than before. Stop seeing picking up offenses where there are none.
