Non-renewable energy resources such as coal and oil for power production have to be minimized to lessen the effects of climate change. Here’s why.
It takes millions of years for coal to form. Oil is no different. These two forms of fossil fuels have other things in common too; they can’t be produced artificially. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for millions of years. We are dependent on fossil fuels for electrical power so that we can have air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and other electrical products and appliances. In other words, we can’t wait millions of years.
Here’s another reason. The planet’s temperature is rising at an accelerated rate due to climate change. All we have to do is tune on the news to see the change in progress. For example, hurricanes are becoming larger and more destructive in areas where tropical storms are rare in autumn. But, what we see in the news is just half of the reality. Scientific data shows that ice is melting faster at the poles and CO2 levels in the atmosphere are rising at historic rates.
Alternative energy sources such as biofuel, natural gas, solar, and wind can help replace the fossil fuels we’re so dependent on. But, it’s no easy challenge for societal, political, and financial reasons. There is one solution that has arrived front and center and brings us all hope for a sustainable planet. And, that is energy efficiency because it provides the best option for conserving our energy resources worldwide.
