Earth Day in Europe

I write this blog more than 4,500 miles from home from the Schneider Electric office in Maidenhead, England. While in the UK, it’s been exciting to see how London is gearing up for the fast-approaching Olympics. One of my colleagues here just shared how the Olympic Delivery Authority has intertwined sustainability into its plans for the London 2012 Olympic Games, including a custom version of the BREEAM rating system

After three lovely days here in England, my trip itinerary takes me to other parts of Europe. As someone who likes to think of herself as very organized, I just realized I had yet to plan what I was personally doing to celebrate one of my favorite holidays: Earth Day. After some quick research, I wasn’t able to find any Earth Day 2012 activities in Istanbul, my weekend stop. So, I decided to contribute to “A Billion Acts of Green” and make a personal pledge.

While traveling, I will turn hotel room lights and the HVAC system completely off when not in the room and keep conditioning within energy efficient set points when in the room. I will not turn on the TV at all and will keep my energy use at a bare minimum. I pledge to only use public transportation during the weekend and seek out sustainable restaurants and souvenir options.

Happy Earth Day to us all…what are you going to do to celebrate our planet this year?
