Transforming buildings: End-to-end decarbonization to drive a sustainable future

The built environment accounts for 37% of global energy-related emissions. With buildings generating both direct and indirect emissions, decarbonization is pivotal for achieving global net-zero goals. Corporations play a lead role in transitioning to a low-carbon economy by reducing carbon emissions in built environments, while also protecting operational resilience and lowering energy costs.

Schneider Electric is the leading partner for decarbonization solutions and services that help corporations connect their sustainability ambitions to actions, and in turn, drive measurable impact.

Leader in decarbonization

Schneider Electric earned the coveted ‘Leader’ position in the Verdantix Green Quadrant: Building Decarbonization Services Report, spotlighting our end-to-end advisory approach that integrates strategy, digitization, and decarbonization under one unified framework. This report is an independent review of consulting services that advance the carbon and energy performance of existing built environments.

In the report, Schneider Electric achieved a perfect score of 3.0/3.0 in critical areas such as optimized building systems management, energy use modelling, and renewable energy strategy and procurement. These scores reflect Schneider Electric’s proven ability to deliver end-to-end support, actionable insights, and measurable impact with our EcoStruxure digital platform, deployed across 480,000 sites worldwide, and our global advisory services, utilized by 40% of Fortune 500 companies.

Why is building decarbonization important?

Building energy consumption must decrease by 25% by 2030 to meet 1.5°C warming targets. This has placed increasing pressure on corporations to adopt decarbonization strategies. Many countries have set standards for energy efficiency in buildings, often requiring compliance with codes like ASHRAE 90.1 in the U.S. or the Building Regulations in the UK, requiring real estate owners and occupiers to rethink and recalibrate their energy use.

Beyond regulatory compliance, there’s a compelling business case. High-performing energy-efficient buildings deliver significant operational savings, reduce stranded asset risks, and improve tenant satisfaction. In fact, energy-efficient buildings can reduce operational costs by up to $0.60 per square foot annually (or over $1 when factoring in utility costs). With almost 2.5 trillion square feet of global building stock today, the potential savings go beyond billions into the trillions.

The roadmap to decarbonization

Schneider Electric meets organizations where they are in their sustainability journey by offering three core advisory pillars to drive sustainability initiatives:

  1. Strategize: this involves the assessment of science-based targets, developing a climate strategy with internal stakeholders and supply chain partners, creating decarbonization and compliance roadmaps, and establishing an emissions baseline.
  2. Digitize: with goals in place, organizations leverage proven digital solutions across their enterprise and site-level operations to actively monitor and identify energy reduction measures and cost-saving opportunities within the business and across supplier networks. Digitization allows organizations to monitor resource usage and emissions, and report benchmarks, in accordance with regulatory and policy frameworks.
  3. Decarbonize: convert plans into action by working across an entire asset portfolio to implement renewable sourcing, fuel-switching, electrification, and efficiency solutions. Identify specific assets for transformation to net-zero and efficient sites. Understand when and how to scale impact with supply chain decarbonization programs, as well as explore innovative circular business models and product decarbonization levers that result in a long-term Scope 3 decarbonization program.
