#SheShapesAutomation: Engineering with trust and tenacity

Starting out: Navigating the world of automation

I’m Shirley Han Yang, Deputy Technical Support Manager for South China, based in Guangzhou and proudly part of the Pro-face brand under Schneider Electric. With over 20 years of experience in Industrial Automation, I’ve had the privilege of leading our regional technical team and supporting customers across the region.

When I first entered the industry, I wasn’t sure if I could succeed as an engineer. Engineering has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated field, and as a woman, I faced unique challenges. But I also discovered unique strengths. I worked hard to solve complex technical problems, and gradually, I earned the trust of more and more customers. That trust became the foundation of a fulfilling and rewarding career.

Growing through customer connection and communication

One of the qualities I’ve developed over the years is a strong customer-centric mindset. I’ve learned how to break down complex concepts into manageable steps, guiding customers through each part until everything clicks. Seeing them grasp new knowledge brings me joy—and I know they feel the same.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a company and team that values not only technical expertise but also connection and collaboration. Over time, I’ve cultivated a humorous and engaging presentation style, often linking technical topics to current trends to make them more relatable.

I still remember a presentation I gave to one of our key customers, CRRC Corporation Limited. That year, Huawei had just launched its foldable phone—a breakthrough that captured everyone’s attention. I shared a story: behind every great success, there’s often an unseen enabler. For Huawei, it was BOE, the display technology provider. I told our customer, “You are the innovator, the leader—but Pro-face is your enabler, your behind-the-scenes powerhouse that helps bring your vision to life.” The message resonated deeply.

Continuously empowered to lead

Looking back, I’m proud to be part of Schneider Electric—a company that embraces diversity, inclusion, and personal growth. As a female leader, I’ve never felt limited by my gender. Instead, I’ve been empowered to lead, connect, and innovate.

To all the women considering a career in Industrial Automation: you belong here. Your perspective, your patience, your creativity—they are all valuable. I hope my story encourages you to shape your own path in this exciting field.
