The International Energy Agency (IEA) released a report in September 2022 about Data Centers and their transmission networks. In our increasingly digital world, data centers play a crucial role in enabling the storage and processing of vast amounts of information. The report analyses the increasing use of power required by data centers.

It stated that “data centers and data transmission networks accounted for around 0.9% of energy-related GHG emissions (or 0.6% of total GHG emissions). Since 2010, emissions have grown only modestly despite rapidly growing demand for digital services, thanks to energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy purchases by information and communications technology (ICT) companies, and broader decarbonization of electricity grids in many regions. However, to get on track with the Net Zero Scenario, emissions must halve by 2030.”

Driving data center sustainability

Data centers have energy-intensive operations which raise concerns about environmental sustainability. To address this challenge, Schneider Electric offers innovative technologies and hardware solutions that can help existing data centers become more sustainable. By optimizing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and improving overall operational resilience, Schneider Electric empowers data centers to operate responsibly while contributing to a greener future.

A five-point checklist for data center sustainability:

Setting a bold, actionable strategy, and measurable targets with transparent, external reporting is the way forward. Data-driven consultations help create an actionable strategy to reach climate and sustainability ambitions.

Implementing sustainable data center designs that prioritize longevity, serviceability, and lower embodied carbon in product selection where digital monitoring and automation are built throughout the design.

Driving sustainability in operations by monitoring and data analytics to enhance performance. Aging infrastructure should be digitized and software tools should be utilized to identify inefficiencies and manage maintenance for on-premise software. Maintenance and modernization services optimize system lifespan and performance, and end-of-life plan.

Buying renewable energy. Scope 2 emissions can be tackled with a comprehensive renewable procurement strategy. Long-term goals can be met through a mix of procurement options that can include onsite, PPAs, EACs, and offsets.

Decarbonizing supply chains. Scope 3 emissions can be tackled with a supply chain decarbonization program. Measure your supply chain’s carbon emissions, establish targets, and engage with partners with Scope 3 footprint evaluation and hands-on supply chain engagement workshops.

Navigating the future of data center sustainability

Energy Efficiency Solutions:

  1. Schneider Electric’s technology and hardware solutions are designed to maximize energy efficiency in data centers. One key aspect is the adoption of advanced power management systems, such as Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure™ platform. This intelligent system optimizes energy consumption by monitoring, controlling, and optimizing power distribution throughout the data center infrastructure. By intelligently managing power usage and minimizing waste, EcoStruxure™ significantly reduces energy costs and carbon footprint.

Renewable Energy Integration:

  1. To further enhance data center sustainability, Schneider Electric provides solutions for integrating renewable energy sources into existing data centers. By harnessing solar, wind, or other renewable resources, data centers can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate their carbon emissions.

Lifecycle Management and Sustainability Services:

  1. Schneider Electric’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond technology and hardware solutions. The company provides comprehensive lifecycle management and sustainability services that help data center operators minimize waste, extend equipment lifespan, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Furthermore, Schneider Electric’s Circular Economy programs promote the responsible disposal and recycling of decommissioned equipment. By recovering valuable materials and minimizing waste generation, these programs contribute towards data center sustainability goals.

Today’s technology and hardware solutions offer a pathway to transforming existing data centers into sustainable and environmentally responsible facilities. Through energy efficiency optimization, renewable energy integration, and comprehensive lifecycle management services, data center operators can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and increase operational resilience. As organizations increasingly prioritize sustainability, partnering with Schneider Electric enables data centers to align their operations with global environmental goals while remaining at the forefront of technological advancements. By embracing these solutions, existing data centers can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable digital future.
