The company is also driving a number of initiatives that assist people around the world who don’t have ready access to electricity. Schneider Electric also participates in training programs to help build a future workforce that is skilled in the area of energy management.
We’re proud to announce those efforts have been recognized by Corporate Knights, which ranked Schneider Electric 13th in its annual ‘Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World’ report. This year’s ranking marks growth from our 2012 ranking, and is the second year in a row that Schneider Electric has been recognized in the report. In addition to the Global 100, Schneider Electric is also listed in major rankings and indexes such as the Carbon Disclosure Performance Leadership Index and the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Europe Indexes.
This ranking is also a testament to our Planet & Society Barometer, which covers the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet and profit. The Barometer is a collection of 14 indicators, such as CO2 emissions, eco-design, sustainable purchasing, and diversity and access to energy, which we use to measure Schneider Electric’s company-wide performance in the areas of sustainability and corporate responsibility.
We also turn that focus inward to evaluate our own practices to ensure we’re operating at the highest levels of sustainability. For example, the Hive, Schneider Electric’s global headquarters located in Francethat houses 1,800 employees, was the first building in the world to be certified ISO 50001 compliant. Not only was the Hive the first building to meet this high standard for development, implementation, maintenance and improvement of energy management systems in facilities, but Schneider Electric was also involved in the development of ISO 50001, lending its expertise and knowledge in energy management to improve buildings around the world. Since this milestone in 2011, Schneider Electric has certified additional buildings as ISO 50001 compliant, including its Smyrna, Tennessee plant, a manufacturing facility for medium voltage electrical distribution products, contributing to Schneider Electric’s goal of reducing the energy use in 9 million square feet of its own building space, covering 40 different plants, by 25 percent.
