This International Men’s Day, celebrated annually on November 19, we reflect on the positive contributions men make in their personal and professional lives while raising awareness about an important yet often overlooked topic: men’s mental and physical health.
This year’s focus is on fostering open conversations about mental health to highlight how well-being empowers individuals and teams to thrive. To honor this day, we’ve invited three of our North American leaders to share their personal approaches to self-care and how Schneider’s culture supports their well-being. Their insights demonstrate how prioritizing health enables us to work as OneTeam across our organization.
Stories of leadership and well-being
Raymond Mills
In his role at Schneider Electric, Raymond is a Customer Experience Program Leader & I2P Advocate, Customer Satisfaction & Quality (United States). He also serves as the President of the Black Professional Employee Resource Group.
“Living near the water, I often go fishing—early morning, late afternoon—whenever the tide is right! Fishing gives me a break from the everyday rush, especially as a remote employee, letting me slow down and just breathe. I find a special kind of peace in hearing the water against the rocks and feeling the anticipation as I lure a fish to the line. Best of all, my family encourages it because it’s what helps me reset and come back to them as myself.”
Raymond’s story highlights the importance of taking time to disconnect and recharge. By embracing moments of mindfulness and self-reflection, he embodies Schneider’s culture of balance and flexibility.
Oscar Lambert
Oscar is the Services Vice President, Customer Projects & Services (Mexico) for Schneider Electric.
“The most important habit I focus on to take care of myself is to DISCONNECT from work to recharge. I take short breaks during the day to enjoy my coffee and clear my mind. I disconnect at midday, dedicating adequate time for lunch and having casual conversations. I disconnect at the end of the day by exercising and not checking emails at night. Actually, I don’t use my mobile phone after 8:00pm or 9:00pm. On weekends, I spend time with my family outdoors doing activities as simple as walking. Also, and this is very important, I take all my vacation days and truly disconnect.
It is amazing how helpful and productive it is to disconnect and take breaks. Since I started these habits, I am much more productive and creative and, I manage the day-to-day stress much better.”
Oscar’s approach underscores how intentional self-care leads to improved performance and stress management. His leadership exemplifies how Schneider’s flexible policies enable employees to prioritize their well-being.
Hugo LaFontaine
In his role at Schneider Electric, Hugo is the Vice President, Industrial Automation. He is also the Executive Sponsor of the Well-Being Employee Resource Network (Canada).
Reflecting on his journey, Hugo shared:
“Reflecting on my university days, I remember the overwhelming pressure of deadlines and competing demands, like balancing academics with social life. It became clear to me that I needed a way to manage stress effectively. I also noticed how easy it was to become inactive, simply filling my time with social activities, work, and sleep. That’s when I discovered cycling as a powerful outlet to relieve stress and stay active.
Throughout the years, as my roles became more demanding, I’ve experienced phases where I neglected my physical and mental health. Each time I did, I found that my ability to manage stress diminished, and my anxiety levels became more apparent to both me and those around me.
Today, I prioritize consistency in my routine, ensuring I dedicate time three to four times a week for physical activity (recharge and release time)—whether it’s walking, hiking, or running. This commitment has become one of the most vital habits I’ve developed for my mental health. Taking the time to get outside, release stress, and recharge has proven to be essential for my overall well-being. It’s a simple yet transformative practice that I encourage everyone to consider for their own mental health journey.”
Hugo also spoke on the connection between well-being and leadership:
“As a leader, mental health is crucial. I believe it directly influences our energy, motivation, and consistency. We all face struggles from time to time, and acknowledging these challenges is vital. Taking care of our mental well-being and being open about its significance is essential.
It’s important to be a little “selfish” (in a positive way) and carve out time for self-care. I often get asked how I manage a busy family life, extensive travel, a demanding job, and still find time to stay fit and participate in long-distance sports. The key connection for me lies in recognizing that maintaining my mental health is fundamental to being an effective leader.
It’s crucial to be honest about the fact that juggling responsibilities isn’t easy for anyone. Showing empathy and being a role model when it comes to being open on the importance of mental health can make a significant difference.
Providing flexibility for colleagues and team members to prioritize their mental health is vital. We all thrive when we take care of ourselves!”
