Wednesday threatened rain early in San Diego but the weather looked up, slightly overcast by conference time. Again, attendees lined up over 30 minutes early for the highly anticipated keynote speech introduced again by Carlos Domingo’s entertaining antics. Yesterday Carlos “chased down” attendees with the Cisco video crew to get input on the conference showing the video at the beginning of the keynote.
Cisco’s Chief Technology Office (CTO), Padmasre Warrior, started her keynote with Cisco’s forecast of mega-trends. The internet will double in size every 5.32 years, video will be 86% of all IP traffic by 2016, and the convergence of video and mobile will be 2/3rds of mobile traffic by 2015. Already we are seeing that 70% of enterprises will be using cloud technology by the end of this year alone, 2012 which will lead to the importance of desktop virtualization, up to 56% in the next 3-5 years.
What Warrior calls OpenX (the combination of open source platforms: open stack, open flow, or open application program interfaces (API’s)) will be integral to major adoption of the cloud. Cisco’s Energywise™ will itself be an important part of the architecture for an intelligent network. The intelligent network must be Open, Secure through policies and prevention, and Agile with the ability to be a scalable, borderless network. Warrior’s 5 key takeaways were:
• Scale span and performance, flexibly for users to chose
• No compromised security
• Consistency across physical and virtual environments
• Multi-hypervisorsy
• Open standards
Padmasre Warrior concluded that this doesn’t mean the PC is going to go away but it will instead be joined by thousands of different and mobile devices.
