On Tuesday, SUPERNAP 8, a data center from provider Switch, became the first multi-tenant data center to earn Tier IV Constructed Facility certification, the highest rating possible under The Uptime Institute’s ratings for mission-critical reliability. As one of only four finished data centers in the United States and the only multi-tenant data center in the United States to earn the certification, this is an incredible accomplishment for Switch and one that Schneider Electric would like to congratulate them on. Schneider Electric is proud to have worked with Switch for more than 8 years.
Historically, multi-tenant data center providers have struggled to deliver out of the box solutions for their customers, often hindered by the very design that allows them to keep each tenant’s infrastructure separate and contained. This week, history changed.
SUPERNAP 8 is built on the same foundation as the original SUPERNAP facility (now referred to as SUPERNAP 7). When that facility opened, our industry took notice and today SUPERNAP 8 is truly the technology ecosystem Switch’s CEO Rob Roy envisioned. This week’s article in Data Center Knowledge shows just how impressive this facility is.
Acting as a new blueprint for multi-tenant data center design, SUPERNAP 8 utilizes a variety of solutions that we expect will become increasingly important to data center end users as they strive for optimal operational efficiency while lowering power usage and decreasing costs. These include:
- A flexible pre-fabricated modular design that enables rapid, low-cost expansion as dictated by customer needs
- Externally located variable cooling infrastructure to provide appropriate cooling as environmental conditions change
As a growing number of large businesses look to consolidate their over-sized data centers into smaller, more efficient ones, and smaller organizations look to expand beyond their networking closets, multi-tenant providers will be called upon even more to provide the necessary space, infrastructure and services to meet growing network computing needs.
