The Schneider Electric Data Center Service Provider (DCSP) Team is embarking on a 4-city tour with experts from 451 Research to present a series of free events that explore issues specific to colocation, cloud services and managed hosting providers.

The DCSP Team is a relatively new group at Schneider, announced in March of this year, that brings together specialists in areas including global project management and execution, supply chain and solution architecture to help address the business needs of colocation, cloud and hosting providers.

Each stop on the tour will focus on a specific topic, as follows.

1. July 23, 2013, Miami: Bullet proofing your disaster recovery plans (The hard lessons of Hurricane Sandy). At this stop, Michael Levy, a Data Center Analyst with 451 Research, will present findings from an Uptime Institute survey following last October’s Hurricane Sandy.

Sandy was a powerful storm that wreaked havoc along the East Coast. Levy will focus on the destruction it brought to the New York / New Jersey area, which of course is home to lots of data center service provider facilities.

The Uptime Institute surveyed more than 100 organizations to learn about how they prepared for the storm and how effective their preparation proved to be. Expect lots of lessons learned resulting from the survey and Levy’s own expertise in the area. (Should be interesting to see if he comes to the same conclusions as Barry Rimler did in his post on lessons learned from Sandy.)

Levy will also present an overview of the supply and demand in the Miami market for multi-tenant data center services.

2. July 25, 2013, Los Angeles: Differentiating your offer in a competitive market. Kelly Morgan, 451’s Research Manager for Multi-Tenant Data Centers, will offer up her view of how providers can tailor an offering that will appeal to LA-area businesses. Topics will include a discussion of varying densities to create different offerings, specializing in specific verticals and a deep dive into supply/demand trends in the LA cloud and colocation markets. After her talk, Morgan will host a panel where area providers will talk about the challenges and opportunities they’re seeing in the LA market.

3. Aug. 13, 2013, Minneapolis: Differentiating your offer in a competitive market. Similar to the LA event, Rick Kurtzbein, another 451 Data Center Analyst, will offer his view on the vagaries of the Minneapolis market. The picture promises to look quite different, however, given each market has its own personality. Similar to LA, Kurtzbein will also host a panel discussion following his talk. After that, attendees will be treated to a baseball game between the Minn. Twins and Cleveland Indians. (Personally, I pretty much never pass up the opportunity for a free baseball game.)

4. Aug. 27, 2013, Bellevue, Wash.: Benchmarking your design/build against the industry’s leaders. Morgan will once again host this event, talking about a topic that we’ve touched on previously, most recently in this post from John Tuccillo about The Green Grid’s Data Center Maturity Model (DCMM). The DCMM is a benchmarking tool currently used by more than 400 organizations. No doubt Morgan will have her own advice for how hosting providers can effectively benchmark their data centers.
