KNX and IoT together are powering the digital space. The combination of these two has proven to upscale the building automation system. KNX has granted the ability of interoperability between numerous device vendors to the IoT with the benefit of third-party certification. Owing to this technology, same appliances can be used as IoT infrastructure. As the solution is targeted to serve the end-user, the devices are made seamless to use by making it functionally viable.
KNX – Present Scenario
The increasing popularity of home automation and KNX system has wowed the records of 2018. Within a span of one year, the number of KNX certified products rose from 7,000 to 8,000 – more than what it was before since the founding of the association in the year 1990. In the coming years, the numbers are set to skyrocket because of the new developments lined up in the protocols. One of the major additions in the technology is cybersecurity.
Major Advancement in KNX IoT
As the devices are connected through IoT, it is accessible to cyber fraud as well. The new product design is made in a way that it works on authentication and or encryption. The device will take signals from authorised controls. It is a two-layer security mechanism wherein, in the authentication phase, the product itself proves that it is the sender of the message and that of course, the receiver can check that. In the encryption phase, data inside the message is encrypted in a form that an unauthorised identity, if receives the message, does not understand the message coded in it. The encrypted message needs a key for decryption which is available only on the receiver’s end.
Benefits Offered by the Technology
It is seen as a technology that along with the Internet of Things will rule the domestic and industrial sphere. Not only will it be limited to home automation solutions, but it will also take industrial processes to the next level by bringing Industrial Internet of Things in place. Some of the advantages offered by this technology are:
- Endless flexibility and personalisation: As the markets are becoming highly demanding, it is essential that the technology is advanced to cater to the modern day needs. To fulfil these, the technology allows a wide range of devices to communicate with each other. The fact that even the products from different manufacturers can interact with each other.
- Timesaving and easy installation: All the devices can be integrated with the KNX software for easy operation. Be it lights, curtains, the air conditioner of a smart home; or data centre controls of an industrial setup.
- Integrated solution: The solution can be used to make any building, a ‘smart building’. The devices or infrastructure can be coupled with any other system to be made independent from any hard- or software technology.

I’ve been longing for a chance to use your KNX/IoT equipment on a project as I would like a chance to really see first hand the potential.
If any commercial electrical customers would like to automate their processes/use IoT controls for anything then I will be sure to check the specifications of your equipment.
I have used Schneider switchgear/accessories for some time but sadly have not had a commercial project on which I could fit this gear!
