Last week’s ASHE Annual Conference hit a new high. The presentations were well-attended and provided attendees with food for thought on everything from hospital emergency power to sustainability to progressing your career as a hospital facility manager and more.
One of my favorite presentations was the keynote presentation on emotional intelligence from Travis Bradberry, PhD, Co-Founder of TalentSmart and Co-Author of the best-selling book Emotional Intelligence 2.0. The “4 steps to emotional intelligence” provided an interesting segway into the idea of building an intelligent hospital infrastructure. For more on creating hospital emotional intelligence, check out my last blog, Hospital Emotional Intelligence: Is it Possible?
Another interesting presentation was “Assessing Your Career Fitness for Today’s Health Care Environment.” Introduced by our own Sean Goings, the session focused on how to get ahead in your career as a hospital facility manager. Topics of discussion included qualities of a good facility manager, suggestions for how to up your game, and ways to get a seat at the table with hospital executive leadership. Recommendations included:
- Complete an annual self-evaluation and business report. Share it with senior leadership to show that you are connecting the dots between larger hospital goals and facility management. Use the opportunity to build relationships with hospital decision-makers.
- Network, network, network. Whether it’s with colleagues, through organizations, or taking additional training, find ways to connect with others in the field.
- Find a mentor. Ask someone you respect for guidance on skills training, networking opportunities, and career path possibilities.
Look for a future blog coming soon for more ideas on how to get ahead in your career as a hospital facility manager.
In addition to the presentation, the trade show was active with attendees visiting the various booths. The Schneider Electric booth offered information and demos on the key elements of an intelligent hospital infrastructure, including building, IT, power management, energy, and security management. One of the main draws was the EcoStruxure demo for Healthcare which takes the viewer through a typical day in a hospital with an intelligent infrastructure. Other highlights at the Schneider Electric booth included the personal digital experience platform which allowed users to play games and email themselves literature in order to earn points to win great prizes. Below are photos of our winners from Day 1 and Day 2. Congrats to everyone who walked away with a freebie!
Finally, the Schneider Electric customer event, held at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium on Monday night was a stellar night with fun, food, and lots of fish! Having the aquarium as a backdrop during our cocktail hour and dinner was a unique opportunity for colleagues and guests alike to network, discuss healthcare challenges, and enjoy the scenery. Despite a downpour when boarding the bus back to the hotel, all had a fantastic time and many left with great memories and photos. Check out some of the best pics below!
We are looking forward the 2015 ASHE Annual Conference, held in Boston – hometown to our Boston One Campus!
