How community, innovation, and purpose came together at GUI’s new Kampung Kampus

Experience sustainability brought to life at Kampung Kampus—where education, community, and mindful living come together with Schneider Electric’s innovative energy solutions shaping a brighter, shared future.

What does it take to build a campus that’s not just about classrooms and facilities, but about community, sustainability, and learning in action? That’s the question Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) has been answering for years, and their new Kampung Kampus in Yishun is the latest chapter in that journey.

Spread across 120,000 square feet (11,150 m²)  of green spaces, classrooms, an amphitheater, and even a chemical-free education farm, this recently launched campus is designed to inspire a return to mindful living and shared responsibility. It’s a place where people of all ages can learn, connect, and experience sustainability first-hand.

At Schneider Electric, we’re proud to have played a role in bringing this vision to life.

Built with purpose

GUI has already touched more than 150,000 participants through over 700 programmes, and the new 120,000 sq. ft (11,150 m²) Kampung Kampus undoubtedly gives this mission a new home.

The official unveiling brought together community leaders, diplomats and partners who all believe in this vision including our team at Schneider Electric.

Why Schneider Electric is involved

Sustainability begins with empowering people and communities. Therefore, when GUI invited us to support them, we saw it as an opportunity to put our purpose into action, not just through technology, but through real collaboration.

As part of our equipment support for education, we provided a range of advanced energy management technologies: breakers, switches, meters, and our EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME) open-architecture software.

We also contributed hands-on engineering expertise, with our specialist making multiple site visits to co-design the electrical infrastructure with GUI’s contractors and panel builders.

However, it wasn’t simply about equipment but creating a living learning environment where visitors both young and old can see what smart and sustainable energy use looks like in practice.

Technology at work

Walk around Kampung Kampus and you’ll see Schneider Electric’s solutions woven into the space:

  • A live energy monitoring display showing how the campus uses and optimises electricity.
  • A power distribution box showcase for hands-on exploration.
  • PME featured prominently in GUI’s “Heartquarters” visitor centre.
  • A fun mix-and-match game introducing kids to parts of a distribution board.
  • Educational boards used in Singapore Green Building Council trainings.

Indeed, it’s technology made human, relatable, and rooted in purpose.

It goes beyond infrastructure

One thing I appreciate about GUI is its unwavering commitment to community. The kampung spirit goes represents more than nostalgia, it offers it’s a modern framework for connection, belonging, and shared responsibility.

Beyond engineering support, our collaboration includes CSR leaders and employee volunteers, with upcoming activities ranging from family engagement days to farm-based volunteering. GUI even honoured us on their Wall of Honour and invited us to plant a trumpet tree on campus, a gesture that symbolises long-term partnership, not just project-based support.

What it means for Singapore’s future

In a world where sustainability challenges are growing more complex, we need ecosystems of purpose-driven organisations supporting one another. GUI’s Kampung Kampus reminds us that change doesn’t only happen through policies or technology. It happens through people, spaces, and shared effort.

Working with GUI has been a powerful reminder of why Schneider Electric exists: to make energy safer, cleaner, and accessible whilst also strengthening our communities.
