Powering AI without breaking the grid: Three pathways for sustainable development

The rise of artificial intelligence marks a new chapter for electricity demand in the United States. After nearly 20 years of flat growth, consumption is climbing, driven by data centers, digital infrastructure, and new industrial activity. AI now plays a leading role in this trend. At the Schneider Electric Sustainability Research Institute, we recently published a new analysis on AI’s rising energy demands and their risks to the U.S. power grid. The report outlines plausible futures and a practical framework for sustainable growth.

We found that by 2030, AI alone could account for up to half of the country’s total load growth. That demand increase, estimated at over 29 gigawatts beyond current grid capacity, represents a serious challenge to resilience and decarbonization goals. In several regions, including Texas and Northern Virginia, power availability is already falling short of data center plans. Without decisive changes, the U.S. grid will struggle to support the AI economy.

But this path is not fixed. AI growth can be aligned with a cleaner, more flexible energy system. The direction depends on where we focus investment, planning, and policy.

Our model identifies three actionable pathways to ensure that AI enhances, rather than undermines, the energy transition.

1. Bend the curve of demand

The first and most direct lever lies in efficiency. Smarter algorithms, high-performance semiconductors, and optimized data center design can flatten the curve of AI electricity demand.

Today’s large-scale AI models are orders of magnitude more energy-intensive than traditional software. Training and inference workloads require dense compute power, with cooling and redundancy systems adding further load. However, not all demand is inevitable. Model architecture, precision tuning, and workload placement all affect energy intensity.

Hardware design also plays a central role. Emerging technologies such as Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and liquid-cooled systems can reduce electricity use while supporting performance. At the software level, model compression, and algorithmic improvements cut training time and runtime resource needs.

Data center design choices made now will have a lasting impact. Growth can proceed without overwhelming infrastructure if the industry prioritizes energy-aware AI from the start. Once treated as a secondary benefit, efficiency must become a primary design principle.

2. Modernize the grid

Demand-side improvements must be matched by supply-side readiness. The U.S. grid, much of which dates back decades, lacks the flexibility and reach required by a digitized, electrified economy. Modernization will determine whether AI expansion remains viable in key regions.

Three types of investment are essential. First, transmission capacity must grow to connect energy generation—especially renewables—to the areas where data centers cluster. Many projects face years of delay due to permitting and coordination hurdles. Streamlined regulatory processes can unlock faster progress.

Second, storage and demand flexibility systems are needed to stabilize a cleaner and more dynamic grid. AI loads offer opportunities for flexible demand, but only if matched by an intelligent grid capable of orchestration.

Third, digital control infrastructure must evolve. Grid operators require greater visibility and automation to manage high-density demand alongside distributed generation. Upgrading control systems and integrating edge intelligence can help balance loads in real-time.

A resilient grid supports AI, and AI can, in turn, support grid performance—provided the systems are built with mutual reinforcement in mind.

3. Rethink data center power supply

Data centers, once seen purely as large electricity users, can become assets to grid stability and sustainability. This shift requires design and operational models that treat energy flexibility as a core capability.

Already, some operators are deploying on-site renewables, integrating battery storage, and participating in grid services markets. These steps convert data centers from passive loads into responsive actors.

AI makes this transformation even more relevant. Inference workloads, which dominate operational energy use, can often tolerate flexible scheduling. This allows operators to align energy use with grid needs—drawing more when the supply is high and backing off when the system is constrained.

Virtual power plant participation, load shaping, and coordination with utility-scale assets create value on both sides. Energy-aware scheduling and visibility into grid signals enable data centers to reduce peak impacts and contribute to local reliability.

Designing data centers for resilience and flexibility expands their role in the energy ecosystem. With the right policy support and market incentives, this shift can scale quickly.

Choosing our future means acting now

AI is reshaping the economy and accelerating the pace of innovation. It is also redrawing the map of energy demand. Whether that shift supports or strains the energy transition depends on the decisions made now.

Reducing the intensity of AI demand, strengthening grid flexibility, and rethinking the role of data centers offer a clear path forward. These three levers give policymakers, utilities, and industry leaders practical tools to align AI growth with sustainability.

Sustainable AI is not a tradeoff between innovation and climate goals. It is a matter of design, execution, and coordination. With the right strategies, AI can drive clean energy adoption, strengthen infrastructure, and improve system-level performance. The tools exist. The challenge is choosing to use them.
