Make 2022’s colors of the year pop with new cover plates

Each new year brings predictions on the colors that will likely grace the walls of homes and buildings across the U.S. over the coming months. But you may be surprised to learn that companies such as Sherwin Williams and Pantone put a lot of effort into their Color of the Year choice — researching and interpreting current fashion, politics, pop culture, social media, world events, and more.

In my role with Schneider Electric™ Canada and as a professional interior designer, I’ve been thinking ahead to how our new line of Square D™ X and XD switches, dimmers, sensors, outlets, and screwless cover plates will work with these new color directions.

Here’s my take on how you can make 2022’s colors of the year stand out with the Square D X and XD Series.

Bring nature indoors with this meadowy hue

Benjamin Moore has chosen October Mist CC-550, described as silver-green and gentle sage, as its color of the year.

October Mist works beautifully as a backdrop for nature, organic materials, and biophilia — it’s calm and inviting. Plus, it truly comes alive when paired with deeper hues of colors found in nature: forest green, burnt orange, and caramel brown.

My cover plate pick: Square D XD Series seamless cover plates in brushed nickel pick up on October Mist’s silver tones — making it the perfect complement.

Merge ocean waves with lush forests

Sherwin Williams has chosen Evergreen Fog SW-9130, a soothing and subtle green with a touch of blue, as its color of the year for 2022.

Also grounded in nature like October Mist, this color leans towards ocean inspiration. White, light gray, soft green, and blue, can live harmoniously alongside this beachy hue.

My cover plate pick: Square D X Series cover plates in gray or white will blend smoothly with this palette.

Perk up your space with a perfect purple

Pantone created Very Peri 17-3938 to ring in 2022. This vibrant shade is described as a dynamic periwinkle blue with a vivifying violet-red undertone.

Pantone colors are typically a direction for consumer products — like coffee mugs and sneakers — versus paint. As such, this spirited and uplifting color will likely be seen in all kinds of home accents. Very Peri keeps the energy high on its own or when paired with lighter or darker shades of yellow, red, blue, or pink.

My cover plate pick:  The entire line of Schneider Electric’s Square D ™ X and XD outlets and switch plates in matte finish will blend or pop with this lively color, but my personal choice is the bronze.

Elevate your home’s style this new year

As you can see, with 2022’s colors of the year, the possibilities are endless and exciting. Here are two final design tips to keep in mind as you ring in the new year.

  1. Mix and match: While it’s popular to have wall and switch plates blend with the wall color, mixing colors is also a good option. Pair a white light switch with a gray cover plate or vice versa to create a perfect contrast.
  2. Dare to disrupt: Go as far and daring as you choose to make your home — and your heart — happy.
