Kindness at workplace: Caring for self and others living with cancer and chronic diseases

February brings two moments that remind us of the power of care at work: World Cancer Day (4 February) and Random Acts of Kindness Day (17 February). Both highlight a simple truth; small acts of care can make a big difference, especially for colleagues navigating cancer or chronic conditions.

At Schneider Electric, we act for everyone to feel safe, respected, and uniquely valued, so we perform our best and create sustainable impact.

As part of our commitment to supporting our employees, we have proudly signed the Working with Cancer pledge. This demonstrates our dedication to improving the work culture for individuals facing serious illnesses such as cancer.

Did you know that research shows that 50% of employees are afraid to share their illness at work, while 92% of patients believe that the support they receive at work positively impacts their health? These statistics emphasize the crucial need for action. And at Schneider Electric, we are dedicated to ensuring that our employees feel uniquely valued and safe to contribute their best, regardless of their health challenges.

We have implemented various initiatives to support our employee’s facing cancer and other chronic illnesses. We support the physical, emotional, mental, and financial well-being of our employees and their families by offering flexible work through our Flex@Work policy, providing paid care leave and giving access to Employee Assistance Programs.

Hear from our own employees

They share their journey of managing a chronic illness, supporting others who live with it, and leaning on the support their family, friends, and colleagues give them. They also share their advice for those who may be going through a similar journey or supporting their teams.

“(…) My colleagues often checked in on me simply to ask how I was holding up, not about work. Some even proactively took tasks off my plate during the most intense weeks, saying, “Focus on your dad; we’ll take care of this.(…) The flexible work structure became a lifeline, helping me rebuild my routine and find stability again without compromising my commitment to my role.”

Gabriela Carvalho – Operations Coordinator (Brazil)

“(…) Today, I am able to stand here because I was never alone. My family, my friends, and my manager and colleagues at Schneider Electric supported me with unwavering understanding and kindness. (…) Within this environment, I encourage each of you to take care of your health, value your time and opportunities, and live each day with purpose”.

Tsutomu Nakatani – Fleet Car Management, PwD Hiring (Japan)

“(…) From my experience, I want people to know that if you choose to share your diagnosis at Schneider Electric, you will be supported — and your career will not be negatively impacted. We truly do have each other, and Schneider Electric is filled with incredible people and meaningful resources that can help when you need to support the most.”

Cathy Susie – Vice President HR (USA)

“(…) They helped create a space where speaking about something once considered “too sensitive” became simply human.  The message then and now remains the same: You are not alone! Whether you’re fighting a disease or caring for a loved one, support exists, and you deserve it.”

Ruba Shebl – Offer Marketing Lead Engineer (Egypt)

“(…) My choice at that time was to remain active at work because it helped me avoid feeling like a patient 24/7, and I was able to combine my personal journey with my integration into Schneider thanks to the flexibility and genuine care I received.”

Marta Fernandez – Iberian HQs & BUs HR Director (Spain)
