Not too long ago, I was a university student, nervously preparing for career fairs and networking events, rehearsing my “Tell me about yourself” pitch in front of the mirror. I remember the pressure—the sense that every conversation, every application, every interview could be the one that shaped my future.
Now, working at Schneider Electric and speaking with students regularly, I’ve had the chance to reflect on that journey—and to share some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way. If you’re in your penultimate or final year of university, looking for an internship or a graduate program, here’s what I wish someone had told me back then.
The power of networking & reaching out
One of the most valuable things you can do during your job search is also one of the simplest: talk to people.
When I was a student, I underestimated how open professionals—especially recent grads and interns—are to sharing their experiences. A short, respectful message on LinkedIn or a conversation at a career fair can open the door to insights you won’t find on a company website. What’s the culture really like? What helped them succeed in the interview? What do they wish they’d done differently?
These conversations can give you clarity, confidence, and sometimes even a referral. More importantly, they remind you that behind every job title is a person who once stood where you are now.

Be intentional with your applications
It’s easy to fall into the trap of applying to every opportunity you come across. But the truth is, being selective can actually help you stand out. Before you apply, take a moment to research the company. Look into their values, their mission, and the kind of work they do.
Ask yourself:
- Does this align with what I care about?
- Will I have the chance to grow here?
- Am I excited about the projects they’re working on?
When you apply to companies that genuinely resonate with you, it shows—in your cover letter, in your interviews, and in the way you talk about your goals. That authenticity is powerful.

Let go of the “perfect” interview
Many people believe that success in an interview comes down to having the perfect answers. But in reality, what interviewers remember most is how you made them feel.
Yes, preparation is important. But don’t let it turn you into someone you’re not. Focus on being present, listening actively, and sharing your story honestly. Talk about what excites you, what you’ve learned, and what you’re curious about.
Interviewers aren’t looking for perfection—they’re looking for potential. And that comes through when you’re being yourself.
Your career doesn’t start after graduation—it starts now. The connections you make, the questions you ask, and the mindset you bring to the process all play a role in shaping your future.
So be bold. Be curious. And most importantly, be yourself. You’ve got this.
