In 2021, at the height of the pandemic—and after 17 years with my previous company—I took one of the boldest steps of my career: changing both my company and industry. It was a move that required a thoughtful career transition strategy to navigate uncertainty and growth. It was a leap into the unknown, driven by curiosity, growth, and a desire to challenge myself in new ways.
Four years later, I’ve had time to reflect on that journey. It wasn’t always easy, but it was absolutely worth it. Here are five invaluable lessons I’ve learned along the way—insights that could shape your own career transition strategy if you’re considering a similar leap.

1. Think beyond the norm
When exploring new opportunities, don’t limit yourself to familiar paths. Some of the most rewarding roles lie outside your comfort zone. Be open to industries and companies you might not have initially considered—you could discover something extraordinary.
2. Seek support and build relationships
Major transitions are rarely solo journeys. Working with a professional coach provided me with clarity, structure, and confidence during a time of significant change. Alongside coaching, mentorship and genuine connections were invaluable. During interviews, I focused on building rapport—not just ticking boxes. The relationships I formed, both formal and informal, played a crucial role in easing my transition and helping me thrive in a new environment.
3. Recognise transferable skills and commit to learning
We all carry a “virtual backpack” filled with skills, experiences, and insights. Identify what you bring to the table and how it applies in new contexts. A successful transition demands curiosity and commitment. Learning a new industry, network, and role took effort—but it was energising and deeply rewarding. I found energy reserves I didn’t know I had.
4. Establish and validate your plan
Collaboration is key. Align your plans with team and stakeholder goals and test your thinking regularly with others. Create space to listen, learn, and adapt. Early wins—no matter how small—can build momentum and demonstrate value.
5. Embrace discomfort and new beginnings
Starting something new can be uncomfortable—and that’s okay. There’s power in acknowledging what you don’t know while still recognising your worth. Every new beginning is a chance to grow, reset, and contribute in meaningful ways. You can always start again, and again. There are always new beginnings!
Taking a career leap can be daunting, especially during uncertain times. But with the right mindset, support, and willingness to learn, it can lead to extraordinary growth. If you’re standing at a crossroads, I encourage you to embrace the journey—and the lessons it brings.
