A journey of curiosity and mastery in the world of data

Hi, I’m Dhiral, a Plant Master Data Analyst (PMDA) at our Mount Juliet Plant in Tennessee. My journey into the world of data analytics began with a Master of Science in Information Systems, majoring in data analytics and data architecture. This academic path, fueled by a passion for continuous learning, equipped me with a diverse set of data techniques. Studying under the late Professor Rick Sherman at Northeastern’s prestigious Designing Advanced Data Architecture and Business Intelligence program set the stage for my future career in data analytics.

Balancing academics and work

In 2022, I embarked on my master’s degree, juggling assignments, assessments, projects, co-op searches, and a part-time job as a Fire Alarm and Safety Officer at the Northeastern Fire Safety and Police Department. The picture in the middle captures me during a break at my part-time job, while the last picture shows me enjoying the start of spring break after completing my final presentation following a long and intense spring semester in 2023.

Stepping into Schneider Electric

On a Monday in January 2024, I walked into Schneider Electric’s Mechanicsburg DC as a Master Data Analyst Co-op. Reflecting on that day, I realize I didn’t just step into a new role; I entered a world brimming with curiosity, mastery, and opportunities. As a Gen Z, I brought with me an innate curiosity, a willingness to continuously learn, and a deep desire to make an impact. Little did I know that within a few months, I would lead high-impact projects, collaborate with senior professionals decades ahead in experience, and feel seen, heard, empowered, and most importantly, trusted.

From curiosity to impact

My journey began with curiosity—questions about data, operations, the “why” and “how.” This curiosity met trust, which I transformed into action to make an impact. After expressing my interest in further growth, what was initially a five-month co-op quickly extended through the summer of 2024. I felt honored that my enthusiasm was recognized, and I led the Lean Digitization System across our Mechanicsburg, PA, and Chino, CA Distribution Centers, combining technology, collaboration, and purpose.

Collaboration and growth

I didn’t navigate this journey alone. I worked alongside senior professionals who brought wisdom, clarity, and structure to every meeting. Their mastery grounded my ideas, while my fresh perspective sparked new approaches. I still remember feeling nervous before conducting project meetings in front of senior leaders, but I never felt small. They taught, uplifted, and guided me. Whether I built MES integrations, developed visual dashboards in Power BI, or supported data alignment and supplier projects, I always felt I was growing with guidance, not pressure.

Mutual respect and human connections

What stood out most to me was the mutual respect. I had the privilege of contributing and being a primary backend support and one of the presenters for record-breaking participation in the May-Nia DC Solutions 2024, supporting the Inbound Supplier project, and even leading a Q2 team-building event. Beyond deliverables, the human connections stayed with me—mentors checking in after a presentation, team members celebrating small wins, leaders genuinely asking, “What would you like to learn next?” or “How can I help you?” or “Do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything.” I vividly remember a moment with the data governance team during my co-op. The data leader prepared a farewell slide for me within minutes upon learning it was my last day as a co-op. These moments made me realize the power of intergenerational collaboration—not just for business but for personal growth as well.

Returning as a full-time student

After my co-op ended, I returned as a full-time student for my final semester, staying connected with my Schneider Electric colleagues. The picture below shows me with the Northeastern mascot, Paws the Husky, on my last day as a grad student. I’m looking forward to my graduation ceremony in May 2025.

Making an impact at Schneider Electric

I always aspired to work at an organization where I could make a significant impact. At Schneider Electric, I lead projects that tangibly improve operational efficiency and productivity. The values and culture at Schneider Electric resonate deeply with my personal and professional goals, particularly their emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement. I feel a profound sense of accomplishment knowing that my work contributes to Schneider Electric’s overall success and its commitment to creating a sustainable future. The collaborative and supportive atmosphere at Schneider Electric encourages me to push boundaries and constantly strive for excellence.

The value of internships and co-ops

Internships and co-ops are incredibly valuable for students, because they allow them to apply their learning in real-world settings while aligning with their career goals and fitting into their schedules. For example, as a master data analyst co-op, I learned, grew, and transformed into a professional in the data field. The eight-month co-op helped me apply my skills hands-on, thereby offering a path to continuously develop my skills, build work experience, and extend my initial five-month co-op to eight months, thus establishing valuable connections with Schneider Electric people. Moreover, at Schneider Electric, I applied my data coursework knowledge and skills to solve challenges, implement change, and automate systems.

Internship vs. co-op

The difference between an internship and a co-op is significant. Firstly, an internship provides on-the-job training, allowing students to test out a career, gain experience, and potentially earn academic credit toward their degree. On the other hand, a co-op, also known as cooperative education, is a form of experiential learning that may be full-time or part-time employment in a position related to a student’s field of study. Ultimately, the goal is to gain deep practical work experience where students can apply lessons from their coursework in real-world business settings.

Full circle at Schneider Electric

My journey at Schneider Electric has been incredibly rewarding, blending professional growth, excellent teamwork, and an inclusive environment. After three months of manifestations, I received the role of Plant Master Data Analyst at Schneider Electric’s new plant in Mount Juliet, TN. Being trusted with this opportunity is incredibly humbling—it reflects how Schneider Electric invests in people who are willing to learn, contribute, and grow together across generations.

At Schneider Electric, every voice matters, and every generation brings something invaluable. I’ve learned that curiosity isn’t naïve—it’s the spark that starts everything. And mastery isn’t rigid—it’s the steady hand that shapes the spark into something powerful. I’m grateful to be part of a workplace where both are celebrated, where learning flows in all directions, and where people—regardless of age—lift each other up. Here’s to continuing that journey, together.
