Co-designing solid-state protection with AlpSemi

One timely example is with AlpSemi, a startup addressing one of the most critical gaps in modern electrical systems, enabling scalable solid-state protection aligned with the needs of increasingly electrified infrastructure.

Schneider Electric R&D teams have been working closely with AlpSemi to co-design semi-conductor technology for solid-state circuit breakers: a new generation of semiconductor-based hardware.

At the center of this collaboration is the transition from electromechanical protection to solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs). These systems operate without moving parts, interrupt faults in microseconds, and enable digital control of power flows, unlocking higher performance and reliability across both AC and emerging DC architectures.

AlpSemi’s technology is designed for power protection, enabling more efficient and scalable solid-state solutions. This approach addresses a key barrier to adoption and supports the shift toward software-driven power systems.

What this means for energy infrastructure

Addressing this bottleneck requires both new system design and breakthroughs in underlying technologies; Embedding intelligence directly into power distribution enables more resilient systems capable of responding dynamically to changing conditions and integrating a growing mix of energy sources.
