Schneider Electric has published a new video targeted at telecom companies that, in just two and a half minutes, succeeds in summarizing the data center challenges telcos face and some of the solutions that can help.
As the video points out, just about everyone today has a smart phone, tablet or some kind of mobile device that they use to surf web sites, make phone calls, send email, watch videos and the like. It all creates an awful lot of traffic that, at some point, passes through a telco data center.
Indeed, in a post last year Schneider Electric VP David Blumanis offered these stats:
Global mobile data traffic will increase 13-fold between 2012 and 2017, again, according to Cisco, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 66 percent. By 2017, 4G will account for 10 percent of connections, but 45 percent of total mobile Internet traffic.
His point was that telcos are one of the “titans” chasing big data game. It should be no surprise, then, that telcos are busy building new data centers, or adding on to existing ones.
I learned this first hand early this year when I met an engineer from the Verizon Wireless National Network Operations team at the 2014 AHR Expo in New York. As explained in an earlier post, he said Verizon Wireless was building “at least a couple” new data centers and he was at the event scoping out the latest and greatest cooling technologies.
If you check out the video that accompanies that post, you’ll see he talks about many of the same challenges mentioned in the new Schneider Electric video. They include reducing energy expenses, meeting sustainability goals, improving performance, ensuring uptime, and scaling to meet demand – all with no gaps in service.
Those are some thorny issues, but Schneider Electric makes a good case that they’re in a position to help telcos deal with them. As the video says, Schneider is “the only company offering lifecycle services, sustainability and energy capabilities, comprehensive data center software and solutions, and a full portfolio of modular and prefabricated offers, all with a global footprint.”
The prefabricated data center modules alone should be attractive to telcos, or any company that needs to build new data center capacity fast. We’ve covered many times on this site the ways in which the modules offer not only faster time to market, but better reliability – all at a lower cost. (This post and video sums it up nicely.)
Check out the new video to get a sense for the various ways Schneider Electric can help telcos address their data center challenges.
