2026 Gartner® Hype Cycle™: DCIM tools enter the plateau of productivity

Our Key Takeaways

  • Gartner Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure Technologies, 2026 positions Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) Tools on the Plateau of Productivity, signaling that the technology has moved beyond early adoption and is delivering measurable business value.
  • DCIM Tools are the only High-Benefit technology in this year’s report expected to reach mainstream adoption in less than two years.
  • As AI workloads increase power, cooling, and operational demands, DCIM software is becoming essential for improving infrastructure visibility, efficiency, automation, and sustainability.
  • Organizations investing in AI-ready infrastructure increasingly rely on DCIM tools to manage complexity, optimize resources, and support long-term growth.

Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) is a category of tools that monitor, measure, manage and, sometimes, control data center resources and energy consumption of both IT-related equipment (such as servers, storage and network switches) and facilities infrastructure components (such as power distribution units and computerized room air conditioners). DCIM tools are focused on optimization opportunities and sustainability.

As Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools become increasingly important for AI-ready data centers, as we see it, 2026 Gartner Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure Technologies, highlights how the category has moved beyond early adoption and entered the Plateau of Productivity.

This directly captures awareness-stage searches such as:

  • What is DCIM?
  • What does DCIM stand for?
  • DCIM software definition
  • Benefits of DCIM tools

This year’s Hype Cycle curve a lot of technologies, and  DCIM Tools sit right on that Plateau.  DCIM Tools carry a High benefit rating, and among every High-benefit technology Gartner tracks this year DCIM Tools is the only one Gartner expects to reach mainstream adoption in under two years. Everything else in that High-benefit tier is still 2 to 10+ years away.

What “mature mainstream” actually requires, according to Gartner

Gartner states DCIM tools monitor, measure, manage and, sometimes, control data center resources and energy consumption of both IT-related equipment (such as servers, storage and network switches) and facilities infrastructure components (such as power distribution units and computerized room air conditioners). DCIM tools are focused on optimization opportunities and sustainability.

That’s a precise description of what EcoStruxure™ IT Expert was purpose-built to do: a cloud-based, vendor-agnostic monitoring platform that gives visibility into IT and physical infrastructure assets from anywhere, correlates device alarms into single incidents instead of alarm storms and runs asset health assessments through Schneider Electric’s global data lake.

Gartner ties four forces to why DCIM’s business impact is accelerating right now:

  • Energy efficiency: Identifies potential inefficiencies and stranded capacity in power and cooling.
  • Capacity planning: Forecasts data center cooling, energy and space capacity needs.
  • Compliance: Supports regulatory reporting and industry-standard measurements related to energy efficiency and environmental impact.
  • Management: Covers IT equipment, power and cooling infrastructure, and environmental conditions.

The report identifies the payoff in four areas: energy efficiency (surfacing inefficiencies and stranded capacity), capacity planning (forecasting power, cooling, and space needs), compliance (supporting regulatory and industry-standard energy reporting), and unified management across IT, power, cooling, and environmental conditions.

The four obstacles Gartner names, and how we think about each one

Gartner is specific about where DCIM adoption still gets hard, and each one maps directly to a design decision in EcoStruxure IT Expert:

  1. Integration with existing I&O tools. As we see it, Gartner calls this essential to getting value from DCIM at all. EcoStruxure IT Expert’s API-first architecture is built so it plugs into the ITSM, BMS, and CMDB systems you already run, rather than asking you to replace them.
  2. Data quality. In our view, Gartner is blunt: existing sources like CMDBs are often unreliable, and without accurate data, a DCIM tool “cannot provide useful information.” Vendor-agnostic monitoring across your full device fleet is precisely how EcoStruxure IT Expert keeps the underlying data trustworthy instead of siloed by vendor.
  3. Complexity and training overhead. In our understanding, Gartner flags this as a real adoption barrier. The subscription-based, cloud-native deployment model behind EcoStruxure IT Expert (registration and rollout without new on-prem hardware to manage) is designed specifically to lower that time-to-value curve.
  4. Upfront investment. Licences, hardware, sensors, and implementation add up, and Gartner calls the initial cost substantial. A subscription model shifts the software and platform side from a capital purchase to a recurring operating cost — sensors and implementation still need budgeting, but the entry point is considerably lower.

Prefabricated modular data centers with DCIM

Gartner states that PMDCs are built using vendor-specific modules, assembled in a set location, shipped to the customer location and installed. They are larger than micro data centers, with multiple racks of infrastructure. They can be configured as self-contained, with integrated components such as server, storage, networking, power, cooling, and physical security, or with power/cooling systems in separate modules.

Schneider Electric’s own portfolio in this space, EcoStruxure Modular Data Center and EcoStruxure Pod Data Center, follows exactly that model: preconfigured or fully prefabricated pods that combine UPS, cooling (including liquid cooling for high-density AI racks), racks, and power distribution into a single factory-tested unit, deployable in a fraction of the time a traditional stick-built facility takes. That’s precisely why we feel Gartner values the category: organizations get data center capacity fast, in disaster-recovery scenarios, remote or industrial sites, military forward locations, or simply where a hyperscale build isn’t the right fit, without sacrificing the quality and predictability of a factory build.

PMDCs are often deployed at multiple, physically dispersed sites that rarely have dedicated, on-site IT or facilities staff. Gartner stated obstacle is that operating these distributed modules “necessitates specialized skills in distributed facilities management, particularly in managing power, cooling, and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools,” and that a lack of trained personnel can stall scalability and consistent operations across the fleet. In other words: the same speed and portability that make PMDCs attractive also make them hard to see and operate once they’re scattered across locations.

That’s exactly the gap EcoStruxure IT Expert is built to close. Because it’s cloud-based and vendor-agnostic, a single team can monitor every EcoStruxure Modular Data Center or Pod deployment whatever the site from one dashboard or the mobile app, without needing specialized staff physically present at each location. Device alarms across the fleet are correlated into single incidents rather than flooding a remote team with noise, and the same UPS health checks and battery wear assessments that apply to a traditional data center apply automatically to every prefabricated module, the moment it’s powered on.

As we perceive it, the recommendation for I&O leaders adopting DCIM is practical rather than abstract.

  • Evaluate multiple DCIM tools for functionality, scalability and integration.
  • Make sure there’s extensibility or compatibility with existing infrastructure and systems.
  • Ensure you have accurate data in your various operational systems of record or plan to improve it.
  • Train and involve staff from relevant teams.
  • Establish standardized data center processes aligned with the tool.
  • Use analytics and reporting capabilities for data monitoring and analysis.
  • Regularly update and maintain the DCIM tool for security and reliability.
  • Evaluate the ROI by measuring benefits and costs.

Schneider Electric is named among Sample Vendors in both the DCIM Tools and Prefabricated Modular Data Centers profiles. As AI-driven density, sustainability reporting, and distributed infrastructure keep pushing DCIM from “monitoring” toward “operational intelligence,” EcoStruxure IT Expert’s focus stays on the things that matter most: vendor-neutral visibility, reliable data, and alarm/incident intelligence that turns raw telemetry into action your team can actually use — wherever your infrastructure lives.
