Headlines focus on models and applications, but a quieter transformation is taking place behind the scenes, and this is one that’s reshaping the physical foundation of our digital world – in the infrastructure. That is why Schneider Electric is launching The Machine Room, a new podcast exploring the people, partnerships and innovations powering the AI era.

For AI, the story is infrastructure
After more than 30 years in the data center industry, I’ve learned that every major technological breakthrough has another story behind it, one that rarely makes headlines. For AI, that story is infrastructure.
The numbers explain why. McKinsey found 78% of organizations use AI in at least one business function, up from 55% just two years ago. Businesses aren’t experimenting anymore. They’re embedding AI into the fabric of their organizations, from manufacturing and healthcare to financial services and supply chains.
Every new AI capability ultimately depends on something tangible: reliable power, resilient infrastructure, advanced cooling and the people capable of bringing it all together.
AI is changing how data centers are designed, powered and operated
Every generation has a technology that changes the way we think about the future. The internet connected the world. Smartphones put computing in our pockets. Cloud transformed how organizations consume technology.
AI feels different. Not because it’s moving faster (and it is!) but because it isn’t simply changing software. It’s exposing the physical limits of the systems upon which our digital economy depends. The conversation is already shifting. The focus is moving beyond training large language models towards inferencing, where AI begins generating real business value. That evolution is changing how data centers are designed, powered and operated.
By 2030, a quarter of all new AI data centers will support rack densities exceeding 100kW. The industry is already preparing for systems beyond 1MW per rack and projects that traditionally unfolded over years are now expected in months.
It’s no surprise that power – not compute – is rapidly becoming the defining challenge of the AI era. One of our guests puts it perfectly: “The opportunity cost is not having access, period.” In other words, success increasingly depends on access to energy as much as access to technology.
At the same time, liquid cooling is becoming mainstream. Digital twins are transforming how facilities are designed before they’re built. Data centers are being retrofitted for AI workloads that would have seemed unimaginable only a few years ago. These aren’t simply engineering challenges. They’re forcing our industry to rethink decades of old assumptions about energy, infrastructure, and collaboration.
Why The Machine Room
All of this brings us to our new podcast. You may be wondering why we chose the name The Machine Room and the answer is simple.
Every technological revolution has two stories. The one we all see: the breakthroughs, the products and the possibilities, and the one unfolding quietly behind the scenes where invention turns possibility into reality. In essence, The Machine Room where power meets compute, engineering meets innovation and some of the most important conversations shaping the future of AI are taking place.
Throughout the series, I’ll be joined by leaders from organizations including TeraWulf, GE Vernova, EPRI, and WWT, alongside pioneers from across the digital infrastructure ecosystem. Together, we’ll explore why some believe we’re facing a “once-in-a-generation” challenge for the electricity grid. We’ll discuss why access to power is becoming the defining constraint on AI growth, how AI factories are reshaping the economics of digital infrastructure, and what it takes to build at a pace that’s never been experienced by our industry.
We’ll also hear perspectives that challenge conventional thinking. One guest describes AI as “the first mile of a marathon that’s never going to end.” Another argues that today’s AI boom is “highlighting the weaknesses in the system,” not as a crisis, but as the catalyst for innovation the industry has needed for years.
What struck me most was, despite their different perspectives, they all arrived at the same conclusion. The future of AI won’t be built by one company or one technology. It will be built through collaboration across an entire ecosystem and perhaps that’s the biggest lesson of all.
