Update from Gartner IT Symposium 2015

There are definitely some life altering and world changing claims at this year’s IT Symposium.

“This is a decisive moment. A digital wave is sweeping through every industry, organization and culture.”

PETER SONDERGAARD Senior Vice President, Gartner Research

“Digitalization is moving from an innovative trend to a core competence for every enterprise” MARK RASKINO Vice President and Gartner Fellow, Gartner Research data center dark light

To summarize –Gartner is saying that businesses must now migrate from whatever their core processes are, to digitized processes with technology enable tools to remain competitive.  They are calling this a Bimodal Business.   This is where you continue to operate your traditional way but introduce a digitized model that you migrate to over time.    And they warn that those who stay business as usual will go the way of the dinosaurs.

They predict the world of the future will be greatly assisted by smart advisors and assistants that will start acting more and more independently without human guidance.  This smart world will be loaded with algorithms that will develop cognitive capabilities including decision making.   This machine world will need faster acting and resilient data centers on the edge.   Which led directly into the topic of my discussion –The Benefits of Localized Data Centers on the Network Edge.

I discussed the different options for edge computing deployment including our configure to order systems –Infrastruxure and our prefabricated micro data center solutions –SmartBunker and SmartShelter.   I gave examples of each and discussed how these solutions could be deployed to reduce latency for IoT and IIoT, content delivery networks, and augmented and virtual reality applications.   I also discussed how these solutions could be configured to order or prefabricated for speedy design and deployment.   Even with these interesting and thought provoking benefits, physical security still seems to be the top of mind concern for CIO’s and data center managers.
